What is DBT?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

DBT is an emotion focused behavior therapy developed and adapted to treat complex behavioral problems caused by emotional dysregutlation. DBT is a comprehensive treatment approach that includes individual psychotherapy, parent coaching, group skills class, between session phone contact and consultation team.

Individual therapy is collaborative and goal oriented with a focus on learning to regulate emotions, communicate effectively, and change behavior. Parent coaching is a specialized type of therapy that helps parents learn skills to better understand their child's emotions, validate and work towards behavior change.

For all clients in comprehensive DBT group skills classes are required. There, clients learn mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation interpersonal effectiveness. Consult teams are groups of DBT clinicians who meet weekly to review cases, problem solve and optimize treatment delivery.

Between session phone contact allows individuals to receive in the moment skills coaching, get feedback and clarification outside of session.
